A while ago, we shared a list of recommendations for getting the best price when renting a car. After analyzing the results of car rental searches on Trabber over the past 12 months, we need to update it, as our analysis shows that renting a car in the city is, on average, 22% cheaper than at the airport.

Why is it cheaper to rent in the city?

Car rentals at airports often have higher rates due to the convenience they offer. Rental companies know that many travelers value the ease of picking up a car right after landing and are willing to pay a bit more for it. Additionally, specific fees and taxes that apply to airport operations often increase their costs, which must be passed on to customers.

Transportation to and from the airport

Before being swayed by the appeal of savings, it is important to consider the cost and logistics of transportation to and from the airport. Depending on the city, public transportation may be an economical and efficient option, but in other cases, a taxi or a private transport service could increase your travel expenses.

Furthermore, if you arrive late at night or leave very early, the convenience of having a car ready at the airport might be more valuable than the savings itself.

Convenience vs. price: What is your priority?

If your priority is to maximize your travel budget and you don’t mind making a slight detour into the city to pick up the car, the cheaper option is clearly more attractive. Moreover, in some cities, starting your journey in the city center may be more convenient for exploring the area before heading to the outskirts. In any case, always compare prices both at the airport and in the city to make the right decision.

The choice between renting a car in the city or at the airport will depend on your specific needs and the type of trip you are planning. If you prefer convenience and have a tight schedule, the airport might be the best option despite a higher price. However, if you want to save money and don’t mind spending a little more time on transportation, renting from an agency in the destination city will be your best option.
